How to use single colour business cards to good effect in your business

As you have planned your business stationery, you already know if a one colour business card is going to fit in nicely with the rest of your business stationery.

Your overall design package partly determines your options regarding appearance. Your graphic design will span all the components of your stationery package, including your business card.

So your decision to go with the one colour concept allows you to focus on what you will have on your business cards. So what do you need to consider?

Because of your overall stationery design, you are confident that your business name and/or logo will appear as it should with the use of a single colour.

Depending upon what information you want on your business card, you have the option of laying out each element in its own section of the card, or overlaying the text over the graphic.

The thing to watch out for when overwriting part of your design is to ensure the overlapping areas are totally legible. With single colour printing this is not too much of an issue, but it could occur if the areas are too similar in tone.

A good example of the use of a single colour is the business card on the right. The whole card is clearly readable and provides the information a traveller needs to know about the motel. I have stayed there and found it a pleasant rest stop with good food. That's why I kept the card, so the card has served its purpose well.

A Business Card printed in one colour

A single colour business card can give a very clear message to your clients and prospects.

What response do you want from your business card?

Using the motel single colour business card as an example, we can take a look at the elements it is composed of.

In this exercise I'm not judging the appearance of the card, rather using it to help you determine if you should employ similar elements on your card.

It is quite common for motel cards to be displayed in neighbouring towns and roadhouses. So having picked it up down the road, what does this card do to entice me to stop at this particular motel for the night?

The owner obviously wants me to stay overnight, so he works at convincing me that he can meet my requirements…

What do you think? Would you be prepared to look the place over and consider staying for the night?

Using just a single colour, enough information has been added to the business card to clearly explain what type of business it is, where it is located, who the owner is, what facilities are available, and they have made it very easy to make contact with them.

What other information could a one colour business card provide?

With our example card, the back (reverse) of the card is blank, so what could we realistically use that area for?

As this motel is on a main highway, and a motel among other motels, a map on the reverse would be an option to consider. Although the adjacent petrol station is a good landmark, it is only after driving up the main street that it becomes visible. In this instance, a map would aid travellers coming from both directions to better locate the motel.

Assuming the motel has a license for alcohol, a brief speciality wine and beer list could be printed on the card. If that's not applicable, what other feature of benefit to the traveller could be added? What you could use the back of your business card for?

Considering that the additional cost of printing the reverse is minimal, it is something to keep in mind when your design your one colour business cards.
