When you want to add more visibility to your business cards you can add a second colour to the mix. This is especially helpful when you want to include a graphic or your logo, yet you still want to keep the overall look clean and easy to read.
With no apology I'll mention again that your decision should be complementary to the overall design of your business stationery package. Your goal is to provide an across the board identity, and your two colour business card should clearly contribute to that image.
Now you have made the decision to use a two colour design we can look at where your effort is to be directed. Where will you add the second colour, which element will utilise that colour and how will you position it on your business card?
It's a good time to review what you want your card to do for you. What result do you want to achieve when a client or prospect looks at your business card?
For example… do you want them to put it away just in case they need to contact you one day, someday?
No! I'm sure that's not your intention, but as you can imagine, that is the fate of many, if not most, business cards.
So somewhere on your card to need to design in your "call to action" for the client to pursue. Do you want them to phone you? Then tell then to do that on your business card, perhaps mentioning an incentive.
If you want them to visit your premises, then tell them to visit. "Come to our shop today to collect your free diamond ring."
Using two colour business cards to improve visibility.
To the right we have an example of a two colour business card, so let's take a look and see what has been used in its design.
We need to respectfully remember that thought has gone into this design, and we should assume that it's working as the business wants. (It's a card I've had for around 10 years so may not be current anyway.)
The use of the first colour, black, contrasted with green works very well. Notice that additional variation has been added by reversing out some of the lettering along the bottom.
When we look at the type of business, we can see it is by nature, one where a buyer will personally attend. So the shop addresses are clearly given, along with their phone numbers.
The graphic is effective as white on green, along with details of what can be found when we visit the business. The additional reversed lettering works well on the bottom edge, with their guarantee and tells us that they buy and trade as well as sell items.
There is no printing on the reverse of this particular card, so an opportunity exists to provide more information and perhaps a call to action or an incentive to purchase.
Although cards can be overprinted at a later date, it is more economical to have your business cards printed both sides at the same time. You could even have the reverse printed with differing information to suit seasonal or other promotional messages. Then you are set up for some time ahead and don't have to mess around with small quantities of printing.
What improvements do you think you can make to your business cards? These cards cost you money, so the faster and smarter you can use them to earn you money the better.
So in summary, if you decide to use two colours on your business cards, make sure the result fits your overall business theme, and the content of the card is designed to promote your business in a manner that encourages the generation of income… fast!
